Can we purchase carbon credits through a third party to offset our emissions?

You pay purchase offsets from anywhere, but only credits bought through Trace will be reflected in the platform and your badge.

Yes, you can purchase and use offsets from a third party. How those offsets are represented and used by Trace depends on whether they are sourced and verified through Trace.

If you would like offsets to be reflected within the Trace platform, Impact module, or Trace badges, they need to be sourced through Trace’s curated portfolio or a custom portfolio procured via Trace. More detail is available in our articles on Trace’s offset portfolio and badges.

If you choose to procure offsets independently:

  • You are free to disclose and communicate those offsets in your own reporting and channels.

  • Those offsets will sit outside the Trace platform scope.

  • They will not be reflected in the Trace Impact module or associated with Trace badges.

This boundary is intentional. It ensures that anything represented within Trace remains consistent, verified, and comparable across organisations.
