How do you use assumptions in emissions calculations?
In carbon accounting, assumptions are estimated values used when specific activity data (like distance travelled, weight, or usage) isn’t directly available. They help fill gaps in data while still allowing us to provide a meaningful and reasonable emissions estimate.
Examples of assumptions include:
-
Estimated water, electricity or gas consumption per square meter of office space
-
Average energy consumption while working from home
These assumptions are based on reliable sources such as government guidelines, academic literature, or industry averages.
How Trace Applies and Documents Assumptions
When assumptions are used in your emissions calculations, we make sure they are:
-
Clearly defined: including the unit of measurement (e.g. km, kg, kWh) and the value applied
-
Source-referenced: we indicate where the assumption came from (e.g. Australian Government emissions factors, industry benchmarks, etc.)
All assumptions used in your footprint are transparently documented and can be accessed via the Data Dashboard. When you download your emissions data export, you’ll find:
-
A list of any assumptions used
-
The units and values applied
-
The source of the data
This ensures your footprint is auditable, transparent, and aligned with best practice.
