How to Set Up and Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in Trace

What is MFA?

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring you to enter a unique code generated by an authenticator app in addition to your password. This helps protect your account from unauthorized access. Trace currently supports authenticator apps like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or any other compatible MFA app.

Setting Up MFA in Trace

  1. Check Your Profile Icon:

    • If you haven’t activated MFA, you’ll notice a red icon at the top of your profile picture. This indicates that action is required.

  2. Access the Profile Menu:

    • Click on your profile picture and select Edit Profile.

      Open user profile

  3. Go to the Multi-Factor Authentication Section:

    • In your profile settings, navigate to the Multi-Factor Authentication tab. If MFA is not yet set up, this section will also display a red icon.

  4. Scan the QR Code:

    • In the MFA section, you’ll find a QR code. Open your preferred authenticator app (e.g., Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator) on your phone.

    • Use the app’s "Scan QR Code" option to scan the code displayed on the screen.
      Setup MFA

  5. Verify the Code:

    • Once scanned, your app will generate a unique time-based one-time password (TOTP).

    • Enter the first code you see in the field provided and click Verify.

  6. Success!:

    • Once verified, MFA will be enabled for your account. You’re now ready to use this additional security feature.

Logging In with MFA

  1. Enter Your Credentials:

    • When logging in with your email and password, you will be prompted to enter your MFA code.

  2. Open Your Authenticator App:

    • Open the app you used to set up MFA and retrieve the current code.

  3. Enter the Code:

    • Input the generated code into the MFA field and click Verify.

      Using MFA Code

  4. Remember This Device (Optional):

    • To avoid entering the code every time you log in from the same device, check the Remember this devicebox. This is useful for trusted devices.

    • Keep in mind that if you log in from a different device or browser, or clear your browser’s cookies, you will need to enter the code again.

Removing MFA

If you need to disable MFA for any reason:

  1. Go to your Profile.

  2. Navigate to the Multi-Factor Authentication tab.

  3. Click Remove MFA and confirm the action.

Important: If you lose access to your authenticator app or device, you won’t be able to log in. In such cases, contact Trace support for assistance.

Key Notes

  • MFA is Only Required for Password-Based Logins: If you log in using a third-party provider like Google or Microsoft, MFA won’t be needed.

  • Backup Codes: Unfortunately, Trace does not currently support backup codes. Keep your authenticator app accessible.

  • Support: If you encounter issues, our support team is here to help.

By setting up MFA, you’re taking an important step to protect your data and ensure your account’s security. Thank you for prioritizing your account safety!
